Hoad family visits to Canvey

John Buckmaster emailed in after finding some old photos of his wife’s family the Hoads and kindly sent them in for us to use on the website. They were taken when the family used to visit their parents who had a bungalow on Canvey in Wilrich Avenue called Stavelot. This is the old couple standing in the doorway, William and Florence Hoad. The can also be seen in the photos at the bottom of the page leaving Canvey during the 1953 flood disaster.

I dont know if it is the same bungalow, but before my dad died (Edward Brian Hoad) he had a vehicle log book address of – i roquois, Paale Road Canvey Island. The date of the log book was 07/03/1960
I think one of the bungalows was at the bottom right hand side of Yamburg Road, not Wamburg. It was either just before Geylen Road or just after it. When Eddie Hoad was young in the late 1940s/early 1950s Bert, May, Eddie and Eileen lived in a bungalow in Westerland Road, just off of Yamburg and then they moved to May Avenue, I think.

These photos are fantastic history for me. William and Florence were my great grandparents. their daughter Ada Casson, was my nan. My dad Len Casson and mum Jean moved to canevey in 1965 from Leyton.
Dad had cousins called Buckmaster, Margret was one. I can also remember Bert and May Hoad.
Dad helped evacuate William and Florance from Wildrych road during the 1953 flood. By sheer coincidence, dads brother Ken and Margret, his wife, moved into a bunglow on the same spot in Wildrych, as his grandparents had.

I’m sure alot of my auntys are in John’s photos.
Darryl Hoad is my 2nd cousin. Alot of my auntys moved to canvey in the 70s.
This page is realy interesting for me. So much history.
