Camping in the late 50s Early 60s

Canvey Island

My family used to go Camping at Canvey Island in the late 50s early 60s. the owners were a Family named Fielding or Fielder.

There were about 12 to15 of us in a large canvas Ex army tent and 2 bell tents.  I am trying to trace any old films as we were often filmed by the owners, my Gran used to look after us all, while our parents had a break from all us kids  lol.

  • I remember quite a few wrecked house boats behind a dry sea wall close to the camp site late 50s

  • My dad worked at the camp for Col Fielder from about 1946 until he retired in about the 1980s. As a child in the 1950s we would regularly go to the camp and watch stage shows put on by local groups. Fun times. Mum would take us in the cafe. It was a bit like being on holiday ourselves. Our relatives from London (Walthamstow) would come to Canvey many weekends during the summer. Remember Mum saying “keep clean your Aunt’s and Uncles will probably come today”. No phones for us those days. What Fun

  • Hi Julia ,
I’m guessing your Dad was Bill Goillau who was our PT instructor at 10th Southend Boys Brigade company at the Canvey Baptist Church. Our Captain was Wally Kingsley who was at that time (50s) also a Fielder’s employee.
Your Dad was really great, he even got me doing various somersaults over the horse and box. I think he was ex army PT instructor, strict but very encouraging. Graham.

  • Hello Graham Yes that was my Dad. He loved to train the boys and sometimes my mum and I would come to the church to watch. Dad passed away about 28 years ago. He was a very proud man and a good dad Julie
