I think I mentioned MacHayes Coal Merchants in the first paragraph of ‘A shopping basket full of memories pt 3’. My particular memory was of the two beautiful carthorses, a Shire and a Suffolk Punch, which used to graze on the field where Leigh Beck Junior School is now. Don’t actually remember them pulling coal carts perhaps they’d already been put out to grass even in the late 40s.
The Coal/ Building supply yard was situated between the Admiral Jellicoe car park and Corsel Rd and extended back to Winterswyck Ave with offices and showroom (I think) and double gates fronting onto Point Rd.
Don’t actually remember any members of the MacHaye family but about the time of the date on this docket there was a lad in our class at Leigh Beck called ? Howard whose father was manager of the business.
Later in the early 60s the site was taken on by local builder Derek Dilworth who used it for a time as the base for his long-distance transport business (bricks from the Midlands?) as well as a builders yard. He stuck an antenna on the office roof which was used for radio contact with his vehicles. It wasn’t too long after that the site was developed with the houses and bungalows which are there today.
