I remember the incident very well as I was at work on the Methane Terminal at the time. An Irish contract painter working on the site planted a suitcase with Irish Airline stickers on it between a gas governor and a bollard with both catches, open so it could not be moved without the case opening. The police were called and declared a major incident which included a number of Fire Appliances attending the site, plus the Bomb Squad. The police had to shut off Thames Road to stop the public from blocking the site entrance. The Bomb Squad eventually fired a charge from a shotgun mounted on a remotely controlled vehicle known as the “Wheelbarrow” and the case thankfully proved to be hoax. The culprit who planted the case was later identified and charged by the police.
