Canvey British Legion Church Parade

Sunday 5th March 1939

Another of Claxton’s cine clips, this time 1939 and a British Legion Church Parade to the War Memorial which at that time was at Jones Corner.

Part of the march comes from St. Katherine’s in the village along Long Road. The British Legion seem to startĀ from nearĀ the Premier Club. All meeting up at the War Memorial. Just love those uniforms.

  • Seeing this cine of the Island Memorial would ,I think, be sufficient for a listing status for the memorial wall which now resides at the Paddocks. When the wall was moved between 1955 and 1962 the bronze plaque was removed and stored by the then council but was only returned by the current council but to the British Legion in 1996! It has however now been returned to the memorial. The original studs are still in the wall which is now sadly tilting backwards approximately three inches. The whole memorial needs refurbishing and discussions are ongoing. Let’s hope a result can be achieved before it falls over!
