Canvey Island

An Ode from the Dutch Island Chronicle 1904

Within an hour of Westmynster there lies an
Unclaimed bit of Englishe Netherland,
An Island salved from ever-widening Thames
By sturdy Dutchmen in ye antient dayes.
A sea wall, like a dyke at Rotterdam,
Guards ye Land from ye flowing tide.

Here let me take my holidaye,
Far from ye brawling of ye busy towne,
Soothed by ye sound of seagulls quarrelling
Over ye stranded shelfish on ye beach,
While from my casement I watch ye
Shipping of ye world go by.
