Canvey Island Carnival 1939

Claxton film clip

This film clip was taken just before the outbreak of WWII. The atmosphere already shows signs of the times with floats showing references to National Service Then and Now and another about being prepared 1914-1918.

Great views and the seafront.

  • The film clip in part conjures up memories of my youth when looking from the sea wall, across the fields on the east of the Casino with in the background the rear of the bungalows in Atherstone Road – it’s an idea . I was born on the Island in 1931 and now live in Wickford. Thank’s For The Memory !

  • I believe the lady on the far left was the 1938 Queen Jean Scott (Drummond)
