Canvey Island Chamber of Trade

Dinner Dance 1974

Canvey Island Chamber of Trade dinner dance 1974. In the photo with Bernard Braine is Sid Alterman and Phyllis Owens and her husband to name just a few.

I have just found this old picture in my family photos which was taken in 1974 of Canvey Island Chamber of Trade Dinner Dance.

The picture was taken at the Cumberland Hotel,Pembury Road Westcliff on Sea.

My Father John Isaacs was the Manager of Waide Pollards which was opposite the Haystack Pub.

In the the picture my father was outgoing Canvey Island Chamber of Trade President he in the back row in the centre of the picture wearing the Bow Tie with the glasses and moustache in the centre of the picture.

My mum Fay Isaacs is sitting in the front row 2nd along from the left.

Also in the picture is the new President who is the lady in the front row sitting in the centre of the picture, unfortunately I do not know her name..

Also in the picture is Sir Bernard Braine, Sid Alterman and many other local business man of that era.

I hope others can put names to the faces.

  • My dad, Clary Swann, was a long time member and past President of Canvey Island Chamber of Trade.  He went on to become Chairman of Greater London Area Chamber of Trade promoting Canvey businesses for many years. The couple standing on the right of the photo are Phyllis Owens and her husband, Mr Owens was a local chiropodist and Phyllis was a prominent and much loved member of St Nicholas Church. I have Dad’s medal of office from his Chairman days and remember attending dinner dances with him all over the greater London area.
