Gilt Cross for Gallantry

The Gilt Cross for Gallantry

While on holiday at Canvey, Miss Lillian Wright, Club Master of the 7th Barking Scout Group saw from the seawall, a young boy having difficulties in the sea.

Miss Wright immediately ran down the steps and dived in and saved the boy (7 year old Rory Jones).

One onlooker said “Without her aid the boy would have almost certainly drowned”

Miss Wright married Mr J L Panton on Saturday 27th November 1937 and was awarded the Gilt Cross for Gallantry on Tuesday 30th November 1937 by Lord Baden Powell.
