The bungalow on the left in front of the council offices was one of a pair called Pax and Ajax, no longer there

This was indeed Jones’ Corner. The house on the corner of Denham Rd. and Long Rd. is not in the picture, but was called “Insulime” (not sure of the spelling) and the house with the dormer window on the far right of the photograph was “Cosy Nooke”, the house where I was born. Behind that on the corner of Tilburg Rd. and Long Rd. was “Pax”, but I do not recollect “Ajax” between there and the council offices, but then I was only 10 when we moved!
Noting the line of stationary cars in Long Rd. I suspect that this was a Sunday summers evening combined with an evening tide. Tailbacks like this were not uncommon with day trippers trying to get off the Island being help up by the Benfleet bridge and level crossing.
