The postmark on this card is August 1914.

The motorbike and side-car, a very convenient way of getting around Canvey but only in the summer months. In the winter the unmade roads turned into mud tracks.

Want to visualise where this was taken? The little ‘Lighthouse’ stood roughly where the bus stop is now outside the Oysterfleet Hotel. Where you can see what looks like a sign on a post is the corner where Barclays bank is now situated. The road in front of the sign is the start of the High Street running to the right.
