Proposed Police Houses

In 1933 there was a police bungalow near Jones Corner which from the letters I have read was actually the Police Station at that time. This map and letters show that the Essex County Constabulary were looking to build extra police residences on the island. We can perhaps assume that now there was a bridge connecting Canvey to the mainland they were in need of extra police to control the visiting mainlanders.

Three sites were looked at on Long Road. One was opposite Southwick Farm near William Read School and it was stated this site could be extended westward to be nearer the school if necessary. The site next to the existing police bungalow was the second to be considered and the third was opposite Convent Road. The costs were £5 per foot frontage.

The letter states that all sites are on a made County road and have all services available, which was not necessarily so on many parts of the island even in 1933. But there was no sewerage system installed although it was in the pipeline. (Sorry could not help myself)

The site that was eventually chosen was the one next to the Police Station. Where Policemen and their families were in occupation for many years.
