This is a great picture of the Dutch Cottage being renovated in c1955. In the picture is the tenant at that time, a Miss Kathleen Garthwaite. Miss Garthwaite was born in Tulse Hill, London in 1882. We are not sure when she moved to Canvey but we have her still living in London in 1936 with her sister Nora who can later be found living in Southend. Kathleen died in 1958.

The names of the workmen in the picture are listed below.

Some previous tenants of the cottage are a Miss Garnet followed by a Miss D Arnold in 1932.

The rent for Miss Garthwaite in 1955 was 10/- (50p) per week. Miss Arnold paid £13 per year in 1932. (Equivalent to 5/- or 25p per week)

  • Kathleen and Nora are listed on the 1939 register as living at 15 Hawkesbury Road Canvey Island, Kathleen was born 29th April 1882 and Nora 23rd June 1884, Kathleen is a retired shorthand typist and Nora is a book keeper cashier both ladies are single.
