Theatricals On Canvey Island

For some time past there have been rumours on Canvey Island of some sort of an entertain­ment to come off about the 17tI1 ult. At the appointed time we accordingly repaired to the little theatre in the Winter Gardens and sat our­selves down to criticise.

When the curtain rose it was evident that un­usual pains had been taken to present the little cantata with every possible chance of success, but we were indeed surprised and delighted at the extraordinary success achieved by Mrs. Lidington, the lady manager, in the training of her charges, small and great. The play ran from start to finish with never a hitch. The good fairy, Miss Alva Lidington, who wrought such marvellous changes in Nature’s routine, looked and acted divinely, and the whole company played and sang with remarkable spirit.

Mrs. Lidington is greatly to be congratulated, and Canvey Island to be proportionately envied in its possession of such histrionic talent, and if this is a foretaste of future effort we may expect to see plays of unusual merit as soon as the new theatre is opened. A collection was taken after the performance, which was forwarded to the fund for waifs and strays.
