Twenty eight trawlers lined up for Holehaven Fisher­man’s Association race for working and charter boats off Canvey.

It was full steam ahead as they sped to Chapmans Buoy in the estuary and back, the larger vessels completed three laps totalling 14 miles, the smaller, two circuits.

Boats came from Canvey, Two Tree Island, Leigh, West-cliff, Southend and Queenborough in Kent.

HFA chairman Mr Mick “Allward presented prizes at The Paddocks in Long Road.

Winner in the workboats section, The Catfish, was awarded £50 and a £50 voucher for radio equipment. Runner up was The Astree.

Charter boats section win­ner was The Poseidon, award­ed a £100 yachting equipment voucher. Runner up was The Jackdaw.

Mr Dave Spurgeon, chair­man of the race organising committee, said: “Twenty four other prizes were given.”
