On Thursday, the annual gathering in connection with the Sunday School at Canvey Hall, Leigh Beck was held. Teachers, parents and children having indulged in various open-air sports, repaired to a large marquee, where a sumptuous meat tea was prepared for them. More than eighty sat down to this repast, which was provided by the Pastor. After tea the whole company adjourned to Cox’s Cafe, where the Sunday scholars rendered various pieces of sacred music in a pleasing manner, and several sacred songs were effectively sung by Mr and Mrs Constable, Miss Chambers, and others. A special feature of the gathering was a presentation made by the members of the congregation meeting at Canvey Hall, and other friends, to Miss Hilda Cox, organist. The presentation consisted of an illuminated address, prepared by Mr. W. D. Laeham. of Romford, a gold watch, with monogram on back, a gold brooch studded with precious stones, and a gold-cased fountain pen, etc. The presentation was made by Mr. Caldwell, pastor of Canvey Hall. In the name of the people and Miss Cox suitably replied. After a service of fruit, the musical programme was continued until nine p.m. when the party unwillingly broke up, all having heartily expressed themselves as greatly delighted with the day’s doings.
Canvey Dramatic Club Concert.— Under the auspices of the Canvey Dramatic Club, a highly successful concert was given in the Marquee, Leigh Beck, Canvey Island, on Saturday when the “Thorpian Entertainers,” under the direction of Mr. Eyres-Hill, were responsible for a first class programme. Once again the marquee was crowded with an appreciative audience, all items being enthusiastically received. The talented concert party comprised Miss Ivy Childs, contralto, Miss Doris Joy, soubrette, Miss Mclaine Teeton, in songs, at the piano; Lieut. Crofts-Jacomb, in humorous song and monologue, Mr Pip Martin and a piano; Mr. Herbert Sames, elocutionist; and Mr. Fred Whisstock, humorist. The programme, being lengthy, it was announced that no encores could be given, but the audience would not be denied, and the artistes were, in some cases, thrice recalled. Altogether an enjoyable concert, and Mr. and Mrs Eyres-Hiil are to be congratulated on the excellence of the arrangements.
