These photos were taken in the 1980s. Paul noted that the gate was locked but you could get round both sides. Where was this? I would say it had something to do with the War Office as it has WO on it. Anyone got any ideas?

This is the same gate that is in the middle of the 2nd photo of the caravans on Thorney Bay Camp but taken from a different angle looking S.E. Looks like it was taken when work was being carried out on the seawall(as in other pictures) and that is some construction equipment directly behind it. In the distance you can see the back of the Water’s Edge/ Gold mine and the small block of flats next door. Heaven knows what that is written on it. Could be just graffiti or Environment Agency code?

Cant be the same gate Graham. It is the wrong angle. I agree with you re the Goldmine I had already spotted that. That is no graffiti I reckon it is War Office and it would be in the vicinity of the Bay Museum. I will have a word with Dave tomorrow.

As I recall, the property associated with the gun emplacement had signs reading “WD PROPERTY KEEP OUT” I think it was “War Department” rather than “War Office”.
