In 1960 Lt.Cdr. Don Robertson a retired test pilot with Supermarine approached G Prout & Sons to build a small flat top catamaran so that he could convert it into a hover craft using an outboard engine to power it with. It worked but he had trouble keeping it in a straight course even with the use of an oar.
