Canvey's Bi-planes

Joyriders

These two photos are of the planes that took people up for joyrides in the skies over Canvey.

The Essex record office hold a photograph of a ‘Small single-engined bi-plane taken at Leigh Beck, c. 1924. This aircraft was operated by Captain Matthews for joy-flights until it crashed in 1925‘. I have not idea if this is one of the pictures below.

Several names have surfaced who are supposed to own these planes. If anyone knows anything the planes or the owners please comment below.

  • Hi Some months back I posted an article on the joy flight operators –Surrey Flying School etc around 1928. I can’t seem to find it now, maybe its too far back. Possibly the site staff can dig it out if its any help to you. Regards Sparrow

  • Hi Found some of it again. The biplane shown taking off with the letters SC on the side is EBSC Avro 548. It is a 504 modified to have three seats for joy flights etc. First registered on 23-06-27 to the Henderson flying school of Brooklands,Surrey,it crashed and was written off on ?-05-1927. This and another 504/548 regularly did joy flights on the field behind what is now the Casino/Lubbins park school. The company folded the following year on the retirement of Capt Henderson. Haven’t traced the tea room plane yet but I’ll give it a go. Regards Sparrow
