The Moorings Drapery Store

Dated 1927

The Moorings Drapery Store
1930's map. The building marked in black opposite Yamburg Road is the location of The Moorings
Swanson

According to Barsby’s book this is a picture of The Moorings Drapery Store all decked out to celebrate Empire Day back in 1927.

Empire Day, which is no longer celebrated, was the 24th May. That day was chosen as it was Queen Victoria’s birthday.

The date of 1927 can be confirmed by the bridge at the front which shows this picture was taken before 1928 when the main road was lowered.

Can anyone confirm? Where was the Moorings situated? When did it become a private home? When was it demolished?

  • This building was opposite Yamburg Road in Leigh Beck. It became a private residence until it was demolished around c1980

  • There’s a picture of The Moorings (from another angle) on Dave Bullock’s Canvey Island website. The shop was on the corner of Taranto Road and the High Street and was demolished some time in the 1980s, according to the caption.

  • This shop was at one time owned by Mr and Mrs Watts. They had two daughters Janet and Jean. Apart from clothes etc it was a drug store this I remember from 1950 when my mother used to buy items from the shop
