Drawing of Sluice Farm by William Henry Caffyn
Jill Goodchild

This drawing has been donated to the Dutch Cottage Museum by Jill Goodchild along with another painting showing a Canvey bus and the Dutch Cottage in the distance. The following is from the narrative at the museum:-

William Henry Caffyn (1870 – 1958) trained as a lithographer and worked in London as an illustrator of posters magazines and books. In the early 1900s he designed advertising posters for Bovril which became well known. A copy of one is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. During World War 1 he drew recruiting posters among other things. Copies are in the Imperial War Museum. He also specialised in drawing portraits of contemporary political and literary figures for publication in periodicals.

His brother had a log cabin on Canvey Island, where he went to stay on occasion during the 1920s.

The drawing looking east or south perhaps from the seawall shows Sluice Farm and you can just see the roof of the farm house. If you look carefully to the right is that the Coastguard cottages? Although if it is why are there boats on the left. Perhaps a bit of artistic licence! What do you think? Please comment below.
