Near Miss--Wintergardens WW2

From local paper 1989

Near Miss: There was plenty of space between bungalows in wartime Canvey, ahead of the extensive developement that followed years later. These homes, in Winter Gardens, escaped when a bomb landed in a field. It left a crater for adventurous, inquisitive youngsters to investigate.

  • I can remember my parents talking about this. I was about 8yrs old. We had a bungalow in Brandenberg Road we used for holidays. We weren’t allowed to go on the island during 1940/42 for fear of invasion, only my father who was a property owner. The rest of the family were stopped at Benfleet station and were put on the train back to London.
