The Red Cow and Village Pump

1930s

Probably one of the last photos taken of the Red Cow PH and the pump before they were demolished in 1937. One of the photos from H Reed’s collection. I have enlarged different parts for you in the gallery below just click on the pictures to view. See how narrow the road was then.

  • Can someone please tell me if the Red Cow was ever demolished and rebuilt further back from the road? As I see it now today, the Canute lays further back from the road with room for cars outside the doors, then a grass area, then the pavement. From the angle of the road and the building on the corner of Holehavan, the road hasn’t been moved further over to make room for the cars, grass and pavement. The mind boggles.

  • The Red Cow was demolished in 1937 when the road was widened. The pub as we know it today was then built further back from the road.

  • I was born in the old Red Cow and lived in it while the new one was built. It was built while the old one was still standing. The old pub stood where the grass is in front of the new pub. My grandfather William Carey was the licensee at that time.
