My Passion for Boat Building - Part Two

1988 to 1997

Some of the trophies from the late 80s

My most successful model power boat Jaguar with 1st place trophies was powered by a converted 35cc Quadra chainsaw engine with a coil cooled cylinder head & ported to produce more power fitted with a tune pipe produced 7bhp it towed a inflatable dingy with 4 people for a bet, it pulled the front of the inflatable under the water and filled it up, I won my £2 bet.

The problem all had was the Radio Control gear available was 27 mhz AM with 6 available the same frequencies were used by the Police, Ambulance & Fire  Brigade radios, if one was in the vicinity it would override our transmitters and send our boats out of our control with 6 boats racing a figure of 8 course it caused a few crashes thats why I always packed the bows of my boats with solid resin. 2.4 ghz FM radio was introduced later.

I built quite a lot of sports boats for other people, these were all surface drive models. as opposed to submerged drive which proved to be faster,

I built a Mercury Falcon 41 model Catamaran for a enthusiast in America, I have put a link to his video of blow over, this happens when they take off due incorrect handling or weather conditions.
