Janet I can’t quite work out the map but I know Len & Georgina Cook vry well and used to visit their farm. It went from the bottom of Denham Road and over Lakeside Path which nowadays encompasses most of Laurence Homes and Link Road to the other side of the roundabout past the Silver Jubilee.

Not totally sure it is the same farm Maureen. Kipcaps/Chimneys i only have details of the farm house. I only have a rough idea where Cooks farm was and many of the farms in latter years covered more or different than the original. I knew Cooks was north of the village but little else. Can you remember where the farmhouse was?

Hi Janet. It was on the left hand side of Link Road on the bend about opposite the Silver Jubilee going towards the roundabout. I don’t know if there are any photos in existence. The front of the house faced towards Benfleet.

There were two Cook’s farms: Len Cook had a farm at Winter Gardens, opposite where the Silver Jubilee now stands, probably what is shown as Kibcaps; Fred Cook had a farm North of Long road, at the end of Village Drive, Green Ave and New Road. The area to the left of Fred’s farm buildings, behind St Katherine’s church was known as Chimneys.

Yes, and Fred’s farm must have been the one where I used to go to see how the milking was done in 1947-48. with Ray Mint, one of my school mates in those days. Lots of fun before heading to school on Long Road.

My brother Eric tells me that Len Cook’s house was at the end of Concord Road, and had “Dairy” painted on the roof. Len’s father, Bob, had the farm before him. Eric worked for Len after leaving school, until Len moved to Fobbing. Len also had some buildings near Little Gypps, and grazed cattle on the land where St Nicholas Church stands.

Kibcaps Farm House and buildings were located in the modern location of Northwick Park School (off third avenue). Specifically in the current school rear playing field.

My father bought Fred (Freddie) Cook’s bungalow from him in 1962. This was where he was living with his ‘wife’ Dorrie. He was a bit non-committal on the exact relationship and there might have been a ‘real’ Mrs Cook somewhere else. The ‘farmhouse’ by then was a bungalow in Green Avenue. Freddie had, by then, mortgaged the farm in parcels. Some of these mortgages had been foreclosed. The deeds include maps and documents relating to Two Chimneys Farm/Chimneys Farm, 60 Acres Farm, Waterside Farm and ‘a parcel of land at Bowers Gifford’, as well as the bungalow. Along with this are deeds for The Orange Cafe, Taylors Garage and a parade of shops and the hostelry known as The Red Cow. There are a few other bits and pieces but, despite a good search, my father couldn’t find anything still remaining other than the bungalow. Whoever owned that lot was quite a wealthy person but the money had trickled away. A clue might be that, when my father closed the purchase it was done in the saloon bar of the King Canute with a handshake and a deposit of £10 in £1 notes. Freddie paid his tab, bought a drink for everyone in the bar and that was the deposit gone. Freddie and his wife moved to Norfolk (possibly Suffolk) to start a small egg and poultry business. We visited them a few times but I don’t know where it was. I still have the deed bundle and, if it’s of interest I’ll get it from storage and let local historians have copies.

Hi my grandad and Nan The Lawrances owned 8 green ave and we as children lived there and went to long rd School if anyone knows we’re the deeds to that property please contact me as we are now the executors to this property and greedy builders are after the land 😇

Hi ya yes refer to my message above we believe my uncle DL Lawrance is Dale Lawrence who lived there when my grandad died he stayed at the property and then left, the bungalow burnt down and was left like that for years unfortunately we believe my uncle moved to India . We had such happy memories there as children especially i At Christmas when the whole family would come together .
