Nice photo. They look so expensively ‘booted and suited’ I should imagine it must have been around the time of what might be considered their peak when they recorded ‘Shakin’ Postman’ in 1965. l-r: Ronnie Gent, Bert Pullen, Dave Skates, Pete Gosling and ‘Ossie'(Peter I think) Osborne.

Hi there – I’m from Canvey Island and just found out that force five were the first band from Canvey to get a major record label. Does anyone have some force five records/cds/tapes that I can purchase? I want to find out more information about them, would love to talk to someone who can tell me their story.

Hi Coincidence that on the same day that there is a enquiry re Force Five that a Canvey Components receipt is on the ‘What’s new’ page as the one of the bands publicity photos was taken outside the shop ( see pic on this site). When we started the Archive way back in 2008 Pete Gosling the sole surviving Canvey member(Rythm guitarist) was kind enough to lend us memorabilia and records for a display at our opening event, I think I took advantage and copied some tracks onto mini-disc but even if I can find them I’ve no idea how to upload them .

Hi Terry, I’ve had a look thru. my mini- disc collection and there’s no sign of any Force Five copies. However ‘Don’t Make My Baby Blue’ and ‘. Shaking Postman’ are both on You-tube. Couldn’t find any B- sides , I think one was an instrumental entitled ‘YEVNAC’ illustrating, with the exception of Ronnie Gent, they were proud Canvey boys.

Terry….I have digital copies of all dad’s released records with Force Five (Dad is Ron Gent the lead singer). Dad is still with us. He just came out of hospital after 3 months just in time for Christmas! His carers love hearing his stories of force five and hearing his songs a much as he loves to tell the tales.

Did they have stage names? I have a signed mini-disc of dont make my baby blue with all their signatures but their autographs look slightly different from their names!? Its also got a piece of paper inside with their signatures on too.

I played in a band in late 70s early eighties the singer was Ronnie gent who I know was in force five and I believe sang on those records as far as I know he’s still around and lives in Southend

My last gig on Canvey Island was at the British Legion Hall playing, ‘rock a boogie’ piano with Dave Skates on drums. It was a great evening. I can’t remember who organised this, or the date, but it was shortly before Dave died at such a young age. Chas Hall ex ‘Red Diamonds’

“Yeah I’m Waiting” was released in 1965 and I used to play it almost continuously when I was testing Radiograms while working at the EKCO Kenway factory in Southend. Force Five were the “regulars” playing at “The Elm’s” London Road, Leigh-on-Sea, early 60’s. Tracks still available via Sotify.

I am interested in this group as I won a competition as a boy, sorry can’t remember from which magazine, and I received an autographed copy of their single at the time which I sadly no longer have, but I always remembered their name and hoped they had a successful career
