Laying of a stone in a new building May 1951

George Curnick Esq

I found this photo when sorting through my parents photos. It shows my father on the left and the stone says

THIS STONE WAS LAID
BY THE PRESIDENT
GEORGE CURNICK ESQ
THROUGH HIS EFFORTS, ENERGY
AND INSPIRATION
THIS BUILDING WAS ORIGINATED
AND COMPLETED
MAY 1951

It was always said that my dad helped to build the British Legion hall. Was this it or is this another building? I would love to find out. There are also photos of gatherings and dinners. It would be good to find out the history.

  • Would this be George Curnick born 1916 in West Ham?

  • Arthur Arnold on the left , then George Curnick, Mr Cashman, Ted Hazelton, over his shoulder Mr Rue,and the lady is Mrs Saville.

You can just see Mr Clark’s head between Ted and Mr Cashman.

Yes Elaine, your parents did help in raising money as did all the committee members and their families… the men worked at weekends and probably other times to build the hall.
