Canvey Island-A Rising Tide

by Leslie Wm. Bills 2004

A review

Leslie Wm. Bills is a Civil Engineer, his book ‘Canvey Island, A Rising Tide’ takes a look at the Islands history through the ages with particular interest in the period after the floods of 1953. As a Civil Engineer he concentrates on the flood defences and how different Councils and water authorities have dealt with the problems. He also looks to the future and the increasing problems of the rising water levels.  The book is very interesting, with lots of pictures I have not seen before. There are lots of details about the sewers, sluice gates and dykes etc. His book is Canvey’s History from a different perspective.  It is well worth a read and can be borrowed from Canvey Library.

  • Leslie William Bills is now 94, and still has fond memories of his tine a a Civil Engineer in Canvey’s Drainage and Sea Defense building projects and maintenance, some of the projects I read his team were involved in were, construction of the lifeboat ramp, the sea pool, rebuilding the pumping stations, sea defenses, one proposal I found interesting with Leslie proposed was the construction of a marine Harbour at Thorney Bay, at the time for Sail Barge Boats from London, that would have made an intressing addition if had gone ahead I think.
