Back in the 1950’s my family had friends, Renee and Jack, who lived in Canvey. In 1959 I spent a week with them and met my first boyfriend, I think his name was Ray. I spent most of the week with him always meeting in the Commodore cafe. He liked Paul Anka and I was a Cliff fan. It broke my heart when I had to go home and although he came to London for a meet up the romance soon fizzled out. They were happy days.

I think my grandfather, Herbert Edward Beale, was the old man Beale who had Beales 'shop'. I never knew him but am trying to find out what happened to him during his life. He was born in 1893 and lived in Hackney. He would have been about 57 if he did arrive in Canvey Island in 1950. Does anyone else have any memories of him, or how long he was at the newsagents?
