Joanne Smith's Post Card Collection

Sent in from Australia

Joanne Smith writes…

Here are some Post Cards, I also have a magazine book Britain’s Great Flood Disaster when the Queen mother and Elizabeth visited Canvey Island, after the floods.

Green Glades Cafe – This was where the current Petrol Garage is next to Michells Ave

My grandfather (William H Smith) also sent some pictures after the flood 31st Jan 1953, I think the photographer was John Charles from Benfleet.

1953 Floods: Larup Ave

I also have some other photos of “Thames House” if needed and photos of a factory that was next to it.

1953 Flood: Long Road – Nightingales Cafe can be seen on the Right

I am interested in finding out more about the South Benfleet Creek Houseboat fire [on the Canvey.org Forum See HERE]. Is there any more infomation on that? I applied for a newspaper from England but to a cost of $130 I only received a short story about Vicky Wright. Any news would be appreciated.

1953 Flood: Mornington Ave

I am in Australia, my father has been here since 1952 and is the only surviving member from his family. I am trying to piece together a family history, maybe somebody knows of someone else to contact?

If anyone can help Joanne, please leave a message below, email in, or leave a message on the Canvey.org Forum.

  • Hi my dad was in the service and was assisted in the flooding. I have been advised that a photo appeared in one of the papers. Where can I find these archived photos. Kind regards

  • We have some here on the archive. Southend library holds local newspapers and there is the British newspaper archive online which is just about coming to the 1950s for some areas.
