Council Election April 1939

Claxton's clips

This is another of Allan Claxton’s old cine clips this time it is 1st April 1939, with the country on the verge of war Canvey Island Urban District Council held an election. The venue is on the site of William Reed School or as it probably was then Canvey Island Secondary Modern School. More can be read about the school here. The original building was built and opened in 1924.

Some familiar faces can be seen the ones so far identified are Miss Clara James and Lt Col. Horace Fielder. Miss James I feel sure is the lady holding the newspaper and Fielder can be seen towards the end of the clip. The only name I could see on any of the posters was ‘French’. We also thought we saw Bernard Braine or his double. He would have been about 25 at the time so it would be a possibility.

If you can have a guess at identifying anyone else please make a comment below.

  • I think I also spotted Arthur Mason and George Pickett and that could have been Farmer Leach on the horse. Graham.
