Do you remember?

Some people today think that the misspelled Flickr is the latest since sliced bread, but we have collected odd pictures years ago. I recently found these images among old negatives, probably from the early 1970s.

The curious notice board was obviously placed on the Benfleet side of the creek – the old sliding bridge can still be seen in the background. It must have been an untidy area then, but the humorous wording caught my attention.

Persecuted London

‘Persecuted London’ would appear to be a houseboat, but I have enlarged a small section to its right, which shows a corrugated iron shed. (see Gallery below) A man seems to be working on a boat behind a wire mesh fence. Can anybody shed any light on this?

As the former Casino is back in the news, it might perhaps be appropriate to remind ourselves of the curious spelling of the ‘Restuarant’.

  • I think “Persecuted” was a houseboat belonging to a rather eccentric gentleman by the name of Ted Heany. There is much about him on the Benfleet Community website
