Believed to be the Whirlwinds from Canvey Island in Essex. Can anyone please confirm this or identify the musicians in the photo?
The Whirlwinds played the Casino Ballroom among other venues.
We understand the members were:
Ron Gent- lead vocals
Bert Pulham – lead guitar
Peter Gosling – guitar
Fred Ford – bass and piano
Dave Scates – drums

From what I can remember Fred Ford isn’t in this picture. I believe it’s Dave Osbourne standing with the guitar. All the others in the photo are correctly named. Laurie Morgan also played guitar with them .sometimes. Great memories of Friday nights at the Casino ballroom.
Hi,
You are quite right, I don’t know the date of this photo but Fred was either bashing pianos in London pubs or might even have joined us as keyboard player in The Premiers. After returning to Canvey in the 80s he and myself were the Ford Pop Duo into the early 90s. Even just a few years ago we were reunited in the Free Spirit band. He is now still alive and kicking in Wivenhoe. Graham Stevens
The group played frequently at the Halfway House on the seafront in Southend in the mid-60’s. There was a US group also called the Whirlwinds and the Canvey group changed their name to Force Five. They played the current groups, Beatles, Stones etc music and were very good. I emigrated in 1967 and often wondered if they ever made it big.
