Canvey Island Official Guide 1963
An official guidebook published in 1963, which features sections on the Island’s “History”, “Features”, “Surroundings”, “Accessibility”, “Sport and Recreation” and “General Information”.
As with many guides even today it also contains an inordinate number of advertisements for local businesses – most long since vanished! – plus a few period photographs of locations and attractions.

Nice to see a Prout Shearwater catamaran built on Canvey on the front page of the guide.
She wouldn’t last long standing there now!
This shop was owned by my mum Shirley Castle. She trained in floristry at Constance Spry in London and made floral arrangements for the royal family.
