From an Echo article about the unveiling on the 13th July 2005.

At the unveiling
The history of Canvey will be remembered for a long time, thanks to a new plaque.
Castle Point mayor Godfrey Isaacs unveiled the special commemorative plaque in the centre of Canvey Village, near the King Canute pub.
The plaque, which gives a brief outline of the island’s history, is a collaborative project between Castle Point Council’s Canvey Island West Forum and the Canvey Island Heritage Centre.
Mr Isaacs said: “It really is a wonderful and fascinating plaque. I appreciate all the work that has been done to make this happen.”
Deputy mayor Tony Belford, who was chairman of the forum when the project was agreed, said: “I am really pleased this has come to fruition because it has taken a lot of effort from everyone involved.”
The project was the brainchild of Margaret Payne, a trustee of the Canvey Heritage Centre.
Unfortunately not long ago (2018) the plaque was knocked down, as can be seen from the photo at the bottom of the page. The plaque has now been restored.
