Long before the modern day Carnival started in the 1920’s there was a three day event with Colonel & Mrs E. Clarke being crowned the King & Queen of Canvey. They were met by members of the public and the Benfleet Highlanders Band as they arrived on the “Royal” barge. The following pictures were taken around 1902, the top picture show the King and Queen’s procession, the bottom shows the ‘court’ outside the ‘Amsterdam’ bungalow.

What fantastic pictures! Where was the Swiss Bungalow in the top picture?
I believe it was the Wintergardens area. I am sure someone will soon tell me if I am wrong
The Swiss Bungalow was behind what is now the Petrol Station opposite the Golf Course (yes – wintergardens). I don’t know where Amsterdam was but most likely in the same area
The property “Amsterdam” was on the corner of Central Avenue and Station Approach. On the East side of that junction.
