It was certificates all round in July 1987 at the Thompson Physiotherapy Unit.

Children, charity groups and businessmen had a well-deserved pat on the back after years of fund raising. Trustees of the newly completed Thompson Physiotherapy Unit, The Gypps, Canvey presented more than 40 champion charity workers with certificates. But the biggest thank-you came from the unit itself. Visitors saw how well their £50,000 had been spent on a hydrotherapy pool, weights, exercise machines and other facilities. Terence Russell, secretary of the unit committee said:” All the money for the our centre has been raised by the community. We haven’t taken any money from the health authority” Mr Russell hopes the unit will open later this year. After long trips to hospitals for treatment Mr Russell, and other friends who also suffer from multiple sclerosis, decided Castle Point needed a physio centre. They started at the Paddocks boosted by a £2,000 donation for equipment by barman Tom Thompson. When the unit opens arthritis, MS sufferers and others needing intense physiotherapy will benefit. A further boost to funds came at the open day. Castle Point Round Table presented a cheque for £800, Castle View School £117 and pensioner Mrs Mabel Cotgrove £130.
