Chaos hit Canvey when repair work brought the town centre’s new one-way system into operation two days early.
Temporary road signs were put up and police officers sent to monitor and control traffic as confused motorists tried to take their usual route to work.
The rush job came after Eldertree Road was closed so contractors could replace water supply pipes.
A police spokesman said they were working into the night to block off both ends of the road and put up direction signs.
He said: “It was a bit of a panic job. We did what we should have been doing in two days times.”
