First birthday celebrations for Canvey music club proved a great success with more than 300 people turning up. Chairman Mr Alan Woodhouse said:” It’s probably the result of the write-up in the Echo”. Only 200 tickets had been sold by 4pm on the day. Then the Echo came out with the piece about Mustang Country Music Club, and numbers swelled. At the party at the Paddocks a £500 cheque was given to the Thompson Physiotherapy Unit, Canvey. The money raised by club members was paid into Essex Radio’s Helping Hands appeal, and radio country music presenter Steve Mitchell handed over the cheque. The club hopes to help the island’s Phoenix Club for handicapped people and raise money for Westcliff hospital’s mini-bus appeal. And to keep members entertained, two Nashville stars will be appearing in mid-May.
