Learning the ropes: Graham Powell, 20 and Jane Lewis, 16 sort out a knotty problem with Mayor Peggy Grant when she visited Furtherwick Park youth club.

A knotty display entangled Tory Mayor Peggy Grant when she visited a Canvey Island youth club.

Around 40 young people aged between 14 and 25 take part in the club’s Duke of Edinburgh scheme based at Furtherwick Park school, Furtherwick Road. The club is always looking out for more people to join in with learning a new skill, taking part in outdoor pursuits and doing some community service, all part of the royal youth scheme. Coun Mrs Grant said: “I was very impressed with what all the youth clubs were doing. They are doing a grand job at getting kids off the street corners.”

The Castle Point mayor also went on to visit a sports night at Appleton youth centre, Croft Road, Benfleet, which raised £50 for Children In Need and Hadleigh youth centre, Benfleet Road, Hadleigh, with drugs awareness quiz raising £100 for the BBC appeal too.
