Hands up: Jamie Dixon, 21, of Canvey, gets the drop on Joyce Hayward and Joyce Taylor of the Lazy C Western Dance Club at the Phoenix Club, Canvey.

Gunslinging cowboys sent a disabled group’s funds shooting up when they performed an energetic western dance show. Canvey’s Lazy C Western Dance Club staged the foot-stomping show in aid of the island’s Phoenix Club and notched up £350 in donations. The formation dance group holds regular fundraising shows at the request of club organisers and performs on an entirely volutary basis.

The dance craze has continued to grow on the island and more than 120 members meet regularly at Halcon Marine, Smallgains Avenue. Instructor Ray Denham said: “We go out to OAP homes, scout groups, clubs and such for fundraising. “This year we have given over £1,000 to charity. It is western line dancing and very impressive, we are always invited back. “We give a demonstration then teach the audience how to do it and everyone has a really enjoyable time.”.
