People power confronted Castle Point politics last week – and the two got along very well together.

About 40 placard-waving protesters gathered to meet a delegation of Castle Point councillors from the highways committee on a fact-finding mission to Mornington Road, Canvey.

They inspected the site to decide whether or not to remove a road block designed to stop the speeding and antisocial parking which has plagued the residential road for years.

Residents’ spokesman Steven Windsor said: “There was no animosity, points of view were exchanged and we were invited back to the council office by councillors to discuss the situation. They really did listen and I have only got praise for them.”

He said feelings had been running high among the road’s residents as a six-month scheme to block the road to non-resident traffic was going to be scrapped after only five weeks although planned for 18 months.

Both the mutually friendly meeting pointed the way to resolving problems he hopes.
