Flood recollections for the BBC.

Recently the Archive received a request to interview Islanders who had memories of the Great Flood. We passed the information to our Archive associate Rod  Bishop, who organised a meeting yesterday at the Town Council office for a handful of Islanders to share their first hand memories with Peter Walker. He is a journalist for BBC East Online and is gathering material for a blog about the 1953 Flood. Rod, Ray Howard MBE, Graham Stevens and Joan Liddiard spent over 2 and a half hours sharing their memories and responding to Peter’s questions. I was present as an observer on behalf of the Archive. I always find it interesting listening to peoples’ stories relating to Canvey.

You can see the bbc page about this interview from this link.

This meeting was actually the second of its kind. Before Christmas Patrick Bernard from BBC Radio 4 interviewed a slightly different group of people for a half hour documentary he’s making about the Flood. We’re waiting to hear when it’ll be broadcast. Watch this space!

The Archive’s also been approached by a London based journalist working for a German national newspaper on the same subject of the the flood.

Reminiscing.
