Service of Remembrance at St Nicholas Church.

70th anniversary of the 1953 flood.

Three candles to symbolise the lost in the Netherlands, Belgium and East Anglia.

On Sunday 29th January Reverend Marion Walford conducted a service of remembrance for those lost and those who survived the dreadful event on the night January 31st / February 1st 1953. A number of Canvey dignitaries were present including, of course Ray Howard MBE. Our MP Rebecca was also in attendance. It was a touching service which included contributions from the Canvey Community Choir and a solo by Alette Penman-Barry. During the service I had the honour of carrying one of the 3 lit candles to be remember those who died in the Netherlands, Belgium and East Anglia. The candles were placed on the alter.

Following the service there were light refreshments in the hall where we had the opportunity to chat with others about that fateful night 70 years ago.
