Flood Pass

Issued in the week commencing 1st Feb 1953.

Remnants of a pass/letter of authorisation issued to my Dad, Aubrey Stevens by Councillor Elkington so he could have access to the Island in the 1st week of the Flood.

Permission to use a boat(if it was still there). Could have been from Madge Moore? Also his place of abode at the time.

When I saw the recently posted photo of the police checking the ‘comings and goings’ at Ferry Rd during the Flood it reminded me about this scrap of paper that was unearthed a few months ago by my brother. He found it amongst remaining bits of my Dad’s archive which he had stashed away at his home in Oxfordshire.

It’s just a note from Councillor Elkington, who lived above his grocery shop next to the bakery, asking for Dad to be given access to the Island. The reason seems a bit vague but appears to have some connection to the Canvey-on-Sea Post Office which was then located within the Baker’s shop, my Grandad being Sub-postmaster. I can only presume that he only used it for a few days—-
