Visits Canvey 4th March 1953

The Lord Mayor of London visited Canvey in March 1953 to see for himself the damage that had been done and to meet some of the people who suffered or who were involved in the rescue work.

At 6 foot 6 inches Sergeant Howes was the tallest Canvey Policeman. He is pictured here being introduced to the Lord Mayor of London Sir Rupert De La Bere by Councillor Pickett. Sir Rupert congratulated William on his rescue work.
