Canvey a Second Lynmouth
Southend Pictorial Flood Supplement February 2, 1953
Daylight on Sunday revealed the completeness of Canvey's tragedy. Our picture, taken from the air, shows part of one of the worst-hit areas of the Island—Newlands Estate, where water at the peak of flood-ins reached the eves of the bungalows. But it was not only Newlands which suffered; very few spots on the Island escaped.
All day Sunday: the stream of evacuees from the Island continued the 'little ships' putting out from Leigh again on an errand of mercy. Cheerful and thankful to be on the mainland, these evacuees beamed as they came ashore at Leigh.
Others arrived on stretchers. All hospitals in Essex were told to stand by for casualties.
