Cinder Roads, Dykes and Mrs Appleby

Looking for Barbara Jones

I am not a natural resident of Canvey but spent all of my childhood visiting and staying with relatives on the Island. My father Ernie Smith was an East elder whose grandparents purchased land and built a wooden Bungalow at the junction of Larup and Goirle Avenues. Doris Bungalow as it was called was quite large had a verandah. The permenant resident was my Great Aunt Alice Smith, a dress maker, and my grandparents Andrew and Ada Smith. The garden seemed so large and various caravans, a hut, sheds and thrilling outside toilets of the bucket variety filled the field. It was to a small child a holiday paradise. We the holiday visitors slept in the hut and spent hours running to the Bungalow leaping on the verandah and so on.  Happy memories of which the Canvey neighbours of the day helped to form too.  Old Mrs Appleby next door across the dyke, the spooky spiritualist church in the Red Cross Hall next door, the crunching of the Co-op milk float on the cinder road all good memories. Back in the 50/60’s I had a friend who I would love to trace And meet again.

My friend was called Barbara Jones and she lived in what is now Goirle Avenue across the road from Doris Bungalow. her house was called I think The Lilacs and was another wooden bungalow. Barbara was an only child and lived happily with Mum and Dad. For sure she married and would now be a nee Jones. I would love to meet Barbara again to relive some memories. Barbara would be in her 60’s now. If anyone knows Barbara or her whereabouts I would love to here from them.

Thank you.
