Canvey in the 1960's

c1962: Laurie & Jenny Atterbury on Canvey

Really enjoyed the site. Often wondered what happened to the old gun towers I used to climb up in the late 50’s.early 60’s and now I know.

The photo on the site is of the actual tower I used to climb. To get up you had to jump from roof to roof of the lower buildings and further up a landing had fallen away so I swung on a steel door to get into the midway section, all very precarious.

My Dad died in Feb 07 and I found many photos in his albums from those days. We used to stay in a caravan owned by my Grandfather (I figure it must have been Thorney Bay, but can’t be sure; I’m sure the entrance was opposite the railway station) and here is the only Canvey photo I could find, it was taken in 62 or 63 and is of me and my sister, Jenny, hope you can make us of it,   Many thanks for the site,   Kind Regards,

Mr Laurie Atterbury
