If they are television sets in the store, it’s probably around 1954, especially going by the screen sizes. ???

We had tv’s long before 1954. Our family had theirs in the very early 50’s. We watched the coronation in 1953 on my grandmothers set.

I agree Joan. I know we had ours in 1952 as I remember watching the Kings funeral on the tv whilst our phone was being connected. When we actually got it I do not know but it was some time between 1947 and 1952. It had to have a large and very heavy magnifying glass attached to the front.

Thanks Joan and Janet. After re-thinking this issue I remembered that our family watched programs on a 9 inch television set in 1952 and long before leaving for Canada in July 1953,!!

We got ours in 1953, in time for the coronation, like most families.
If people on the Island had tv’s prior to 1953 surely the tv’s would have been destroyed in the floods, along with other furnishing.
We were lucky, or more likely my dad’s foresight, that he built our bungalow higher off ground level and no flood water got inside our home, on the corner of Coker/Ormsby road. The fields all around us (at that time!) were all water that fateful morning.
